CHICAGO SHAPES RESPONSIBLE AI

PRESS RELEASE

Chicago Launches Women AI Labs Initiative to Help #FixTheAlgorithm Through Community-Led Innovation

HDI Chicagoland and Women AI Labs Invite Business, Education, Technology, and Community Leaders to Build More Equitable AI

CHICAGO, IL — A coalition of technology professionals, educators, community leaders, employers, students, and innovators is coming together to launch Women AI Labs, a grassroots initiative focused on improving AI outcomes through community-driven research, innovation, education, and action.

The initiative's first major milestone will be a Chicago #FixTheAlgorithm Vibe Coding Innovation Event scheduled for July 18–19, 2026, bringing together diverse teams to explore practical solutions to AI bias, workforce transformation, future career pathways, and responsible AI governance.

The effort is being supported by volunteers and community leaders connected to HDI Chicagoland, a nonprofit professional association dedicated to advancing technical support, service management, leadership, and technology careers.

Why We Are Doing This

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly influencing hiring, healthcare, education, lending, workforce decisions, customer experiences, and public services.

While AI offers tremendous opportunities, growing research shows that algorithmic bias can unintentionally create unequal outcomes for women and other underrepresented populations.

Women AI Labs was created to answer a simple question:

What if communities helped shape the AI systems that shape their lives?

Rather than simply discussing bias, the initiative seeks to create measurable proof that diverse teams, supported by responsible AI practices and human-centered governance, can improve outcomes.

Why Chicago?

Chicago is uniquely positioned to lead.

The region combines:

• World-class universities
• Global corporations
• Strong nonprofit networks
• Innovation hubs and incubators
• Diverse communities and talent pipelines
• A long history of public-private collaboration

Chicago provides an ideal environment to demonstrate how local communities can contribute to national and global conversations around AI ethics, governance, workforce readiness, and innovation.

Why We Are Involving the Community Now

The future of AI should not be designed by technology companies alone.

Students, educators, employers, job seekers, researchers, business leaders, public sector organizations, and community advocates all have perspectives that matter.

By involving the community early, Women AI Labs aims to:

• Increase awareness of AI bias and responsible AI practices
• Create future workforce pathways for students and career changers
• Support workers affected by technology and AI-driven workforce disruption
• Develop practical solutions through hands-on innovation labs
• Build partnerships between business, education, government, and nonprofit sectors
• Create a repeatable model that can be adopted by other cities

Building the Future Through Pop-Up Innovation Labs

Women AI Labs will organize community-based Pop-Up Innovation Labs that bring together volunteers and partners to tackle real-world challenges.

Potential focus areas include:

• AI Bias and Equity Research
• Future Career Development
• Workforce Transition Support
• Responsible AI Governance
• Human-Centered Service Design
• Municipal and Community Challenges
• Education and Digital Literacy

The goal is not simply awareness.

The goal is action.
