Women AI Labs is proud to announce that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded us a $1.2 million grant under its Advancing Informal STEM Learning programme. The funding will support the expansion of our flagship AI Equity Education Initiative to 12 new cities over the next three years.

What the Grant Will Fund

The grant will cover curriculum development, instructor training, community partnerships, and subsidised participant costs in cities including Detroit, Houston, Phoenix, and Philadelphia. Our goal is to train 3,000 additional women and non-binary individuals in foundational AI skills by 2027.

Why This Matters

Women remain significantly underrepresented in AI research and development. According to a 2024 Stanford AI Index report, women make up just 22% of AI researchers globally. Without targeted intervention, the gap between who builds AI and who is most affected by it will continue to widen.

"This investment is a recognition that closing the AI gender gap isn't just good ethics — it's essential for building AI systems that actually work for everyone." — Dr Sarah Okonkwo, Executive Director

Applications for the 2027 cohort will open in January. Sign up to be notified.
